What is Fondue? Fondue in French is a type of food originating from France, Switzerland and Italy. But it is basically a product of French cuisine. Yes, you heard that right, it is not a dessert but a type of food. Unlike what we know, this dish is made from a mixture of white wine and cheese. When we ask what fondue really means, there are also variations made with meat, cheese and chocolate, and you can see that it is usually made with a fondue set. In cheese fondue, cheese is melted and bread is dipped in the sauce, in chocolate fondue, chocolate is melted and eaten with fruits, and in meat fondue, butter is melted and pieces of meat are dipped in this butter and eaten. In other words, it is not just dipping fruits in chocolate as we know it, it is actually a type of food that has many different forms. The emergence of fondue seems to have emerged out of necessity, as is often the case.
In the old times, the Swiss used to produce and store a lot of bread and cheese for the winter period at the end of the summer months, around the beginning of autumn, to be consumed in winter. However, due to weather conditions, these breads and cheeses would become stale and hard after a certain period of time. Of course, as time passed, the Swiss mixed their local wine with the hardened cheeses and then heated it. They saw that by heating and reusing the cheeses, they obtained a very delicious sauce. And without realizing it, they found a delicious sauce. On top of that, they mixed the hardened bread into this sauce. They realized that the stale bread had softened and they had a delicious dish.
After such a discovery, this dish became the traditional dish of the Swiss. Families would line up in front of their stoves in the evening and eat this delicious dish that they loved so much. In 1930, the Swiss Cheese Association declared this dish a traditional dish. Yes, there is an organization called the Cheese Union, it’s a bit strange and surprising. After Switzerland, the fondue dish started to spread to other countries in the 1960s. In America, it became a famous food in 1970. Worldwide, this dessert is at the forefront with chocolate rather than cheese and meat fondue.
